Arimed patients and practitioners sit down and have a heart to heart about the issues that confront amputees, from self image to lifestyle.
Bill’s Story: Bill is an Arimed prosthetist who enjoys a very active career/lifestyle, and counts bicycling among his hobbies. His below-knee (transtibial) prosthesis does not stop him from bounding up and down 2 flights of stairs at work. Aside from his personal experience, Bill’s extensive work with many amputee patients has allowed him a unique approach to prosthetic care.
Catherine’s Story: Catherine’s recovery from her surgery was a long road of many ups and downs. Through it all, she found that her family was the bedrock of her successful journey. She now enjoys an activity level beyond what she thought possible for an amputee. She was initially resistant-then she received her prosthesis. Now she works closely with her Arimed prosthetist who ensures her prosthesis fits through weight fluctuations, and monitors her gait even through injuries.
Kareem’s Story: As a young man, Kareem had an emergency surgery to save his life, rendering him as a bilateral upper extremity amputee. Arimed fitted him with myoelectric prosthetic arms that function via electrical signals from muscular contractures of his residual limbs. Kareem went back to college, completed his degree, and wrote a personal book about his entire experience.
Peter’s Story: Peter was born with a condition that led to the removal of his foot. Growing up an amputee, he’s had to learn to fit in and keep up with his peers. This has not stopped him from playing with his friends, and being an athlete at his school. It’s all his family can do to keep up with him! Peter’s prosthetist at Arimed has helped him transition as he outgrew many prostheses in size and function as Peter grew taller and his lifestyle became more athletic.
Taki’s Story: Taki’s battle with cancer culminated with a complex hemipelvectomy. As an adult in the prime of his life, he had to learn to walk all over again. Taki now works as an engineer in California and is always active at the job site, often climbing ladders to inspect work. He flies back to New York to consult with his Arimed prosthetist and receive adjustments on his prosthesis. This close relationship over the years allows his prosthetist to help Taki regain an active lifestyle in the sports he loves.
